Dyeing mash

H12cm D9cm (appx); inspired by the concept of kintsugi

Earlier this year, I made some plates and vases using mash of two materials: old newspapers and corrugated cardboard. Newspaper mash dries to a greyish color, while corrugated cardboard tends to dry in shades of light brown to yellow ochre. I dyed the newspaper mash blue while keeping the cardboard mash brown. I started off not knowing what the results would be, as with most artistic endeavours.

For this project, I used bowls, vase and bottles as mould. The unmoulding and putting the pieces back together were very challenging. I was inspired by the concept of kintsugi—embracing imperfections—to appreciate the cracks that formed when unmoulding. The results turned out wonderfully, and I’m truly amazed by them.

Through this project, I learned that what seems easy for some can be quite a challenge for others, reminding me that we should never judge another person’s choices. The process also made me reflect on what I truly believe in and embrace in my own craft.
